Sometimes when we have a big challenge in front of us we can talk ourselves out of it before even giving it a shot. Like when we have a lot of weight to lose, it can be hard to believe that we can ever make it to our goal, because it seems so far away.
The best way to tackle any big job is to break it down into manageable pieces. Start with a goal of losing just 2lb, and give yourself enough time to do it – two or four weeks, or even more if necessary. That’s possible for anyone.
Once you have achieved that, set a goal to lose another 2lb. You’ll have more confidence this time, because you will have done it before, so there’s no reason you can’t do it again.
Just keep taking small steps like this and focus on your small goals. Don’t worry about your ultimate goal – you’ll get there without even realizing it, without having to stress out about how big it is.
It’s like chopping down a tree. There’s no point standing there thinking about how many chops it’s going to take and how big the tree is. Just focus on making each individual chop count, and keep repeating. Before long the tree will fall!
