Replacing Bad Habits

Adapting to a new lifestyle is the key to getting into shape, and lifestyle is all about new habits.  A mistake that many people make is to just drop bad habits cold and replace them with new healthy behaviors.

The problem with that is that all habits provide you with some kind of payoff, that’s why you keep repeating them, and if you suddenly take the avenue to that payoff away, your brain will look for some other way to get it.  If you’re an emotional eater and you suddenly stop overeating, what’s going to replace junk food in helping you cope with those emotions?  Your brain will find something.

The trick is to replace bad habits with new healthy ones that give you the same payoff.  If eating helped you deal with stress, find something new and healthy that does the same thing.  How about smashing a punching bag for 10 minutes?  Or locking yourself in your room, turning up your favorite song and dancing away!  Maybe a nice hot herbal bath.

Whatever works for you – the goal is to replace bad habits effectively, not just stop them.
